Healthy Schools Campaign

Many schools are aware of the dangers of asbestos and the subsequent health problems disturbed asbestos can cause. But how many schools are aware of the dangers of dust in general? How many are aware of the government regulations on levels of dust in the workplace environment?

Dust is not just a nuisance in regards to cleanliness it can cause numerous respiratory diseases and skin complaints, some of which can greatly affect the future health of both staff and students alike.

Art and Design classes are havens for dust, with various types to be found in classes such as woodwork, metal work, craft workshops, sculpting and ceramics, painting and drawing.

Pastels and Charcoals can create respiratory irritations, while Woodwork classes can see dust particulates that cause all manner of irritations including asthma, rhinitis and skin disorders.

Simple monitoring for dust particulates can ensure that your school is as healthy an environment as you can provide.

SKC Dust Sampling Kit In ceramics and pottery classes it is also important to test for Crystalline Silica which is found in the dust created by dry clay. Ignored it can cause the devastating disease Silicosis which may not show signs of development until years after exposure. Happily though there are now fewer new cases of silicosis diagnosed each year in the UK, due mainly to the result of better working practices, such as appropriate ventilation, dust-control facilities and the use of face masks

What are the safe levels?

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) refers to EH40 Health and Safety Executive (HSE Publication EH40:2005) Publication which gives workplace exposure limits.

How to sample for Dust

Use the specifically designed Dust Sampling kit from SKC for all types of inhalable and respirable dusts, along with the comprehensive but easy to follow Step by Step Guide and Methods for the Determination of Hazardous Substances (MDHS) 14/3
